You may be allowed to work for up to 20 hours each week during the academic year. You may also be allowed to work full time during the Christmas and New Year period at the end of each academic year. To work you will need to apply for a variation of conditions to your student visa. One criteria for student to be allowed to work is that the student is enrolled in a full time programme of study of at least 6 months duration, that the primary purpose of the programme of study is to develop English language skills, and the student has an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 5.0 or above (General or Academic Module). Another criteria is if you are undertaking a programme of study in New Zealand that leads to a New Zealand qualification that qualifies for points under the Skilled Migrant Category of Immigration New Zealand’s Residence Instructions. If you meet the criteria and you intend to work while studying it is strongly recommended that you include a request for variation of condition as part of your student visa application. You can apply for a variation of conditions as part of your application for a student visa, by ticking the option at section E2 of the Student Visa Application (INZ 1012) More information on working while studying may be obtained from the Immigration New Zealand website at www.immigration.govt.nz.
