Certificate in Pharmacy Technician (Level 5)

Graduates of this qualification will have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours required to work in a dispensing pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.  The potential employment pathway is to work in a range of dispensary related roles including those in community, hospital, industrial and educational settings in pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician is included in the list of skilled occupations that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category of Immigration New Zealand.  (INZ Operational Manual - Appendix 6, Skill Level 2 Qualifications).

This programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under Section 249 of the Education Act 1989, and Kauri Academy is accredited to provide it under section 250 of the Act.

Programme Length

The programme length is 70 weeks (about 1 year and 5 months including holiday weeks) with 147 total credits. The programme is divided into three semesters with 18 weeks of practicum.


Programme Content

The main topics covered in this programme include the various aspects required of pharmacy technicians in the pharmacy sector.  Subjects include an understanding of the Pharmacy Council Code of Ethics, communicating with customers, application of the relevant pharmacy legislation and regulations, application of an advanced level of knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and medicine used in the treatment of health disorder and understanding the use of and dispensing medicine services. 


Entry Requirements

Targeted learners for this qualification are international and domestic students and must be at least 18 years of age.

They will have a level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Pharmacy (Introduction to Pharmacy Practice) (Level 3) qualification, or a domestic or international bachelor degree qualification in a health related field, or comparable pharmacy qualification.

The programme is conducted in English and so one of the following English proficiency outcomes is required: Academic IELTS 5.5, with band less than 5.0, or an equivalent as specified in Rule 18 of the Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2013.

Students must complete a face to face or video link selection interview.

Student loans and allowances for potential domestic students are currently not available for this programme.


Working While Studying

You may be allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week while studying.


Requirements to Pass the Programme

The primary methods of delivery are face-to-face, learner-centred classroom instruction using power points, tutorials, group discussions, research opportunities, field trips, guest speakers and work based practicum. Work based learning will occur in the last semester of the programme to prepare the students for a real life experience and apply the knowledge and skills acquired over the previous two semesters.

Assessment methods include, but are not limited to; written assignments, presentations, written reports, verbal demonstrations, case studies, portfolios of evidence and work place observation of skills. Assessment will take place either in the classroom or in work placement situations.

Every 6 weeks. Students who are offered a place in the programme may enroll in the next intake unless it is full, otherwise they may enroll in the next available intake.

Working While Studying

You may be allowed to work for up to 20 hours each week during the academic year. You may also be allowed to work full time during the Christmas and New Year period at the end of each academic year. To work you will need to apply for a variation of conditions to your student visa.

One criteria for student to be allowed to work is that the student is enrolled in a full time programme of study of at least 6 months duration, that the primary purpose of the programme of study is to develop English language skills, and the student has an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 5.0 or above (General or Academic Module).

Another criteria is if you are undertaking a programme of study in New Zealand that leads to a New Zealand qualification that qualifies for points under the Skilled Migrant Category of Immigration New Zealand’s Residence Instructions.

If you meet the criteria and you intend to work while studying it is strongly recommended that you include a request for variation of condition as part of your student visa application. You can apply for a variation of conditions as part of your application for a student visa, by ticking the option at section E2 of the Student Visa Application (INZ 1012)
